Soft pastels (they feel chalky, and crumble fairly easily)?
Or Oil Pastels? (oily in texture)
Some of the art supply stores online have tutorials - or better yet, go to your local large chain book store and head to the discount art section (bargain books) there's usually a book on how to for this medium there.

Find a technique that suits you. Mess around and see what kind of pressure to use or if you want to rub the pastel down after drawing. An artist is only limited by his/her imagination!

it's a tough medium to work with.
but to be accurate, pastels work in between charcoal and paint.
I like to call it dry painting.
(approach it just like painting without mixing activities).
i guess you can mix the pastel on the canvas -but beware, it's very easy to muddy up the color -esp if you are using chalk pastels).
