Sounds like you just gave an honest answer. Sometimes people don't want you to be honest. They want only praise. But at least you got selected as best answer! Well, going by that Q&A, I guess she wouldn't be too well off if she were a professional artist, because if she cant take constructive criticism, then she definately would have quite a lot of trouble in the reality of art shows!

I think you were being honest, not even brutally honest either, you actually said it quite nicely, so I'm not sure how it came about to you being called a "sour puss"

I'd just forget about it, it'll be her problem in the end when she tries to show her work and cant take constructive criticism for what it is: constructive.

You said "I have to say you need to practice", she might have been offended at that, but I don't see anything wrong with your answer. If she wants to be a serious artist she should be more open to critique.

She was disappointed because you sound to her like her work wasn't good enough. Art doesn't have to be perfect.
