Artists: What do you draw in your sketchbook?

My sketchbook is where I practice new techniques I want to get better at.
But I'd love to get some more ideas of what I can add to it.

What do you have in your sketchbook?

I use my sketchbook as a multipurpose catch-all! Diary, address book, sketch pad, idea generator, poetry book, collage collector!

It is interesting to look back to see what my interests were 10-20 yrs. ago! My memory isn't that good to remember all that junk!

Mine is just for sketching out ideas and practice too. I don't know what else you could do.

Perhaps of interest to you though is the website below. They post sketchbooks from professional artists and there you might get some new ideas as to the possibilities.

I do a lot of anime-styled faces and people when I'm just doodling. I do a lot of anime characters I can draw (or almost draw) from memory, and I experiment with making my own. Sometimes I try to cartoon myself. If I doodle in class I might draw any sort of thing--little monsters, mushrooms with faces, or I might try to draw one of my friends or classmates as anime or cartoon character. Anything that might get me thinking outside the box is good, but it's people most of the time. I also might get inspired by a word or sentence or something I randomly see or think of, so I will just go with that and work with whatever comes from it.

none of its any food, but i draw what i like to call anime/manga (poorly executed, somewhat ripped-off, choppy, blurry, barely can tell that its human anime/manga)

Sometimes I draw anthro art (in anime style) although it's not exactly the best around...or popular with mainstream media.

So far, I've drawn (not traced, cuz i don't do that, even though it looks that way, but it's not)

Aaron from Lunar Knights

Sonic

Kirby

Paper Mario

Yoshi

Toad

undfinished sketch of Toon Link and Toon Zelda

Unfinished sketch of Lucian and Aaron (Lunar Knights)

an anthropomorphic monkey (urban street, somewhat but not totally Goth clothes)

an anthro lion (very basic, arms crossed)

an anthro bat (plainly dressed, never finished it)

an anthro monkey kid breakdancing and with dreadlocks (the only one I finished)

a chibi version of the pic above (me, cuz i love monkeys, I was born in the Year of the Monkey)

kid with a cool jacket (faceless, never finished head)

Swordskid (with dreadlocks, never finished)

not good at drawing chicks, but I've got 2 somewhat done (poorly)

A kid running (Dreadlocks blowing in the wind...)

everything after the unfinsihed Toon Zelda and Link drawings are mine and totally original. most of the characters (who are animal-related) I drew were concept art for a story I'm writing. It's about a group of (12) animal-human hybrid teens trying to overthrow the evil organization that experiments on humans and stuff. I was thinking on getting it published and then turning it into a manga. It's kinda violent, and has moments that make you wanna cry, like flashbacks of family dying, and junk. there are plot twists that kinda deviate from the usual cliches, like when the damsel saves the guy when he's almost killed, chicks WHO CAN ACTUALLY FIGHT, a genius 8 year old who causes all the grief in the story, and a hero who meets a bittersweet ending...he BARELY escapes death, but his life after isn't exactly easy afterwards...

As you can tell, I'm obsessed with drawing dreadlocks, mostly because I hardly see any black people as main characters in anime/manga who aren't stereotyped or background props (I'm drawing them to try and change that). And monkeys, cuz they're seen as poop-throwing animals who can't do anything right (I'm changing the way they're seen, too. they can be awesome fighters, and smart as hell) I don't do wolves, cuz everyone loves them and says that's their fave animal cuz of being a loner or something (not to down them, just wanting to see some non-wolf anthro art for a change) Originality is something I value as well.

If you're not into anthro art, then give it a try. Some of the art is actually well done, but sometimes you have to sift through poor or even obscene drawings to get to the stuff you wanna see (such is the suffering of an artist; there are imitations and radicals who go a little too far and may ruin the genre for others...) Even though it may seem weird at first, you might learn something new, and will have tons of variety to choose from (that is, if you stray from drawing wolves all the time. I'd like to see other animals that don't have muzzles or dog-like features, and dragons don't count as anthros in my eyes cuz they're mythical creatures, much like unicorns, ligers (has anyone breeded a tiger and a lion yet?) wrong-colored animals (blue tiger, green fox, etc.) and fusions of 2+ totally unlike animals (a wolf with a sharks tail, tiger stripes, turtle's shell, wings, you get the point.)

sorry if i ramble on, but i really think you should consider looking at the stuff i suggested (google it or go to deviantart, i don't care.) i probably sound bias, but some of the stuff i'm looking for isn't there...from an aspiring artist, I think you can understand...
