Abstract design is a design which has no referrants to anything concrete (either mechanical or organic) in the real world. Thus when Vassilly Kandinsky first described Abstract Art he was talking about music and spirituality. It is design which devotes itself entirely to decorating whatever surface or object it adorns, and has no other purpose.

It means using a non-figurative image for use in a company logo – for example instead of a picture of a lawn-mower you could use a green rectangle; instead of a picture of a swimming pool you could use a blue circle; instead of a picture of a pencil you could use a scribbled line.
