Question:
Why Is it so hard to draw something?
anonymous

My friends can naturally draw complete pictures by hand with a pencil in less then 10 minutes, and they look beautiful. Whenever I try to draw something, it takes me hours to just make the head of whatever im drawing; it looks awful.
Why is it so hard for me to draw something? I take my time and use pencil and only go small lines and details at a time, but why is everybody else better then me?

first thing, don't feel bad if your drawings aren't mind-blowing. There is no such thing as a "natural" artist. Some people may learn faster, true, but drawing is a learned skill. Some of the best artists took a long while to get to the level they're at, and even then, they're still learning!

second, drawing takes time. You can't rush a drawing. It can take hours, days, weeks, months.... but most of the time, the longer you take on a drawing, the better the end result. Make sure you complete at least one drawing, no matter how minor, a week, to keep exercising right brain.

I always use a reference photo when drawing. I study it, and then draw it; it never turns out looking like the original (sometimes I change it, like the nose or lips), but still turns out pretty. Sometimes I take part of one photo and part of another and mix them to make it how I want it.

Tips for drawing:

-The more you draw, the better you get.

-The only way you can cheat in art is if you trace

-Check out a variety of books that teach you how to draw

-You can't draw and talk at the same time. You talk with your left brain and draw with your right, so it's best to draw in a quiet place.

-When you watch how-to-draw videos, actually DO the activity.

-Keep all your work to see how to progress

I'm going to do this separate, because I feel like it's extremely important:

-Never ever ever ever EVER compare yourself to other artists. EVER. Doing that will make you feel worse about your work, and you'll falter and even give up. Only focus on doing better than your last time. If you see a drawing that you think is better, complement the artist, but don't overthink it. They're not you, so don't dwell on it.

You may take longer to learn, but those who struggle more are more likely to be better in the long run.

Draw Something Cheat Drawings

Jake, most of us see hundreds of pictures every day, pictures that are rich in detail, focused as to subject, and with colors to catch the eye and the imagination. The concept of "drawing a photo" must go away. You are trying to capture every fine detail and the "sketch artist" is willing to do the bold strokes that capture the outline and the character of the subject. If they draw a building, they have the line and proportion of the building and then they place the detail that will make it identifiable, such as a tall front entry, or Greek columns. I think I would know your pictures by the presence of all of the windows by actual count, some with curtains, some with shades, some open and some closed, but none of them left out of the picture. You may be trying to achieve the quality of the courtroom artists that do all of the litigants in Federal Court where photography is forbidden, if so, you need the very best of schools to reach that level of skill. There is a test for artists that asks the student to turn a picture upside down and then to draw what is seen. When done, the copy is turned upright and the surprise is in just how much better the work comes out. The science tells us that rather than being subject to the bias of how we think of the subject, when it is inverted, it becomes just a collection of lines and we simply draw the jumble that we see without the bias of thinking. Sounds weird, but once you do it the experience is like finding a sixth finger on your hand that you had not seen. De Beste tot Alles

Before photographs, the great artists practiced drawing from real life. Look at some of these practice sketches done by Michelangelo.

The more you practice drawing from visual reference (from real life or photography) you will imprint these images into your mind. Over time you will be able to see and draw these images from memory and not rely on visual reference as much.

If you would like a book with visual reference, check out my free ebook which has 100+ photographs of things to draw. Drawing people, animals, objects, and still life's will help you draw more realistically and become familiar drawing different things. Give it a try.

I do both quite easily, however when dealing with other artists I have found that most find the human face the most difficult to draw. I love It!!!!! To me the reason would be that the human face has so many different angles and planes and the personality shows in the eyes and that is not an easy task to bring out in a two dimensional format. The 'mapping' of the face is tricky as well because if everything is not right where we expect it to be it seems distorted. There are tricks to getting say the placement of the eyes correct, or the length of the nose in reference to the length of the face. I adore doing the human form and face and the movement of animals is really fun to illustrate as well.

Maybe they were taught or just have natural talent for it. We as people cannot be good at everything. I'm sure your talented at something that your friends aren't. Maybe your good at sports. Maybe yor good at performing arts. Whatever it may be, that's your own talent. And that talent is something your friends don't have. If you really wanna learn how to draw better, take a class! That could be something you and your friends do. Or, I know there is websites that can teach you how to draw certain things. Try youtube. That's a good source.

Hope this helped :)
