Question:
Some tablet-friendly programs similar to DA Muro?
2012-01-01 11:09:40 UTC
I've recently received a new Wacom Bamboo tablet and i am looking for a few good programs or browser mediums for it to be used on. Since i am an avid user of DeviantArt at the moment i am really loving their DA Muro and it's sketch tools. Though this is really simple and i'd love something which is similar but with varied tools etc. It can be downloadable or browser based i am not really that fussed.

Thank you, Happy New Year!

This site lists over 20 digital art programs to try out, some of them are free: http://www.artworkbymo.blogspot.com

Click on the label REVIEW DIGITAL ART SOFTWARE to see the entire list.

Scroll down to the bottom, It recommends using ArtRage Studio Pro because it is easy to use.

Congrats on your new tablet!

Personally I like to stick to dedicated software (still love to play around in Muro of course!). My favorite for quick sketches is Autodesk's SketchBook Pro. It's oriented a bit more toward product design, but that won't hold you back :) It's simple and capable, but it isn't free, but you might want to try out a trial. It's also available on iPhone and iPad, so you can work on drawings wherever you go.

A lot of people tend to overlook the illustration power of Photoshop. It's where I do the majority of my detailed drawings and "digital paintings". Of course, if you don't already have Photoshop, it's expensive to get without a student discount (many of which are available).

In the realm of free, many people like GIMP. I don't have a lot of experience with it, but I hear good things.

the absolute BEST (in my opinion) thing to use is PAINT TOOL SAI. it cost about 60 bucks, and you get a free thirty day trial. if you don't have the money, you can still draw the stuff in sai and then just copy the pictures to paint, and save it there (because after the 30 day trial you can't save on sai).

along with being AMAZINGLY SMOOTH with the tablet pen (unlike the free GIMP 2.6 program) it also includes the "smoother". this is something at the top of the program with the number 0

What this does is it SLOWS DOWN the tablet pen, and automatically makes your lines cleaner.

also, if you look all the way on the left, you will see a grey area. if you look closely there you will see a blank piece of paper with a pen on it. this is sai's version of the pen/path tool. It slows down your pen, like the smoother, but it also shows marks where the line changes direction, so you can change it that way. I don't use this often, sticking with the smoother, but it IS helpful, especially when drawing straight lines.

One more thing- I reccomend downloading SAI AND gimp 2.6

gimp is a free program that is very similar to photoshop. I reccomend you download this because with gimp you can add CUSTOMIZED BRUSHES to your picture, making EASY backgrounds.
