I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm really into graphic design. My gpa last year wasn't so good it was like a 2.7 I'm pretty sure but I'm doing better this year it's like a 3.2 from my calculations. Anyways, I did really well in my computer art 1 or graphic design 1, however you wanna say it, and I am now enrolled in design 2. My school offers 4 years of this course and I encouraged my teacher to start a graphic design club which has like 28 people I'm pretty sure in it and I'm one of them. I am looking forward to finishing four years of design and enter a college/university for this. So please name some schools along the east coast and some tips for my possible future career. Thank you, the answers are much appreciated!

Parsons, School of Visual Arts, Rode Island School of Design, any of the Art Institutes. But if you really are interested in the Graphic Design profession, don't focus on a name brand school. Focus on a School that will teach you practical skills both in terms of design principles and software skills like Photoshop.

In terms of how a Graphic Design Education is actually valued in our profession a degree in Fine Arts actually gives you more flexibility in the job market than a degree in Graphic Design specifically, you may want to consider doing a Minor in Graphic Design.

Being a "Working Graphic Designer" means a heavy emphasis on how to use Graphic Design software effectively to perform task and produce results. A Fine Arts background will help with your ability to work creatively and broadly and may help you build illustration skills to compliment your digital skills and make you faster.

Illustrator's and Photographers are valued in Graphic Design specifically because of the extra things they bring to the table and the fact they have a skillset outside of the computer.

You may also want to save money by doing an Associates in Graphic Design then transferring those credits towards a Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration on Digital Art or Print Making.

Graphic Design jobs are more about your Portfolio, Personality and Presentation Skills than your Degree, the Degree is just a filtering mechanism and you just need to have on in a relevant field.

Most interviewers aren't concerned about your College credentials in Graphic Design anyway. They want to see work you've done on your own and for clients, in fact Portfolio work from college is often looked down upon by interviewers at Agencies and Studios.

Don't wait for college to start becoming a Graphic Designer or to get a Graphic Design Education. Do a Google Search or Talk to Design Students and find out what the Syllabus and Required Reading are and just know that out on your own. Study Graphic Designers who have Youtube Channels and find out what it is really like and what they do in their everyday job.

Find Free Graphic Design Software and Start doing online tutorials to get familiar with the graphic design process, the software, techniques industry standards and terms.

The problem that keeps many college grads from getting employed is that they are relying solely on their schooling to position them for a job and give them the skills and tools they need. You need to walk out of College with the degree being a key past the gate and armed with something more than 4 years of general education, you need to armed with Results that inspire confidence in the person hiring you that show them that you're an asset, not a risk.

The Link I've added is a video where I talk about How To Learn Graphic Design and offer links to books and resources.
