Sanford Turquoise Drawing Pencils are the top standard, and Derwent is also nice. If you want to give your friend something special that he/she may not think to get for themselves, the Sanford Design Ebony Layout Pencil is also a lovely gift. And Prismacolor Woodless Graphite Pencils feel very "decadent" as they have no wood in them and they have a nice heft and robust feel.

Tombow Mono Professional Drawing Pencils are also good quality, very refined, and have impact-resistant lead.

Are you asking as an "artist"or someone who want's to

learn art?If you feel you "are" an artist, you need not ask this question.I ask this because I mean"What works best

for you"?There are many pencils, charcaol, ect,at art

supply stores ect, with many ranges of shade.light to heavy

application. It depends on you application pressure.

But being an artist has nothing to do with the pencil..As long as it's very sharp,Any pencil would really do.

But then again if you are an accomplished depicter or

drawer,Then a charcoal pencil may depict more quality in

you as one,and are very challenging to draw with and require practice and accuracy of your vision.Charcoal pencil cannot be erased and is easily smeared with the hand.

I would try these and or some very nice colored pencils.

I would recommend any art supply store for advice.

Artists can be very particular, with their medium of performance. But as an artist I am sure your friend will appreciate any gift,in the field.

I use two brands - Prismscolor and Derwent. There are also different degrees of hardness within these brands, and thickness of the pencil. Also, each brand has different shades of colors.

I prefer soft because I can blend color upon color. I've done a lot of colored pencil drawings over the years. One thing you will discover is that the drawing will eventually give off a waxy film onto the glass when it is framed. This is not unusual, but you will have to take the glass out of the frame and clean it occassionally.
