Harder pencils (h's) are better for technical drawings and fine work, not so good for artistic work, generally the softer the pencil (B's) the more range you'll get out of it. sketching outlines is best done lightly with a fairly soft pencil (2B or similar). that way they can be removed easily if needed and you won't have dented the paper as you would with a harder pencil. Best thing to remember is to keep a sharp point on the pencil you are using as this will give you the full range of marks and shade you can use. (when the pencil goes blunt it's much harder to do fine work and to vary the marks you make.)

2b is good for sketching and a thicker darker one for shading

I prefer to use 2B pencils for initial sketches. HB is middle ground on the graphite scale. The higher B numbers result in softer leads and darker pigments, so they are good for shading, and blend easily. If you want some really dark areas, use an 8B pencil, which is practically black.
H grade pencils will have harder lead and lighter pigment, so they are perfect for small lines and details. Be careful about how hard you press with H pencils though, because they can indent your paper.

You can use any pencil grade for sketching and shading. The following tips will help you: Graphite Pencils come in the following pencil grades: 9B 8B 7B 6B 5B 4B 3B 2B B HB F H 2H 3H 4H 5H 6H 7H 8H 9H Reading left to right (9B to 9H), the color range goes from dark to light. The B pencils are dark. The H pencils are light. 9B is the darkest color (black), HB is the middle color (medium grey), 9H is the lightest color (light grey). Reading left to right (9B to 9H), also shows how soft or hard the graphite is. The B pencils are soft graphite. The H pencils are hard graphite. 9B is the softest and it smudges very easily, HB is in the middle, 9H is the hardest which doesn't smudge at all.

RE:
what grade of pencil is best for sketching and shading?
my friend bought me a book showing how to draw dragons, he also bought me a sketch pad and a tin of pencils ranging from 5h to 4b. Which are best for initial outlines, final outlines, shading etc. The book doesn't give any advice on grades of pencils, and since I've got the tin I'd...

for sketching use HB for shading either use 2B or B or even 4B if you want to do real dark

It really comes down to personal preference. Try them and see what works for you.
Some artists only use one pencil for all drawings (usually a soft one). Some artists will use the whole tin on one drawing.

HB is in the middle and the higher the H number in the H scale ie 5H the harder the pencil these are better better for fine line I normal use a 2H and on the opposite side the higher the B number the softer the pencil ie 4B is very soft and the better for shading and I normally use a 2 or 3B

The hiogher the number on the pencil. the softer it is, so a low grade HB pencil is best for outline and drawing, and for shading, you need around a 4 or 5B
