What are some great books on drawing anatomy? I'm kind of a beginner, so I need a great book that goes into detail. I'm sort of on a budget, so I need the cheapest book possible. What books have been great for you?

In order to draw people well, do the following:

1. Buy books on anatomy, head/figure drawing, light & shade, perspective. Practice drawing the pictures in the books and study the information. Buy books at Amazon website.

2. Buy mannequins and practice drawing them from life.

3. Take life drawing classes. If you can't take classes, draw your family and friends from life.

4. Study and practice drawing other people's artwork.

5. Buy magazines. Practice drawing the people in the magazines.

MASTER HEAD AND FIGURE DRAWING:

1. Classic Human Anatomy by Valerie L. Winslow. This is the NUMBER ONE anatomy book you should buy! It explains form, function, movement, proportion, light and shade on the face and body. Shows bones and muscles. Has male and female figure drawings.

2. Drawing The Human Body: An Anatomical Guide by Giovanni Civardi. This is the SECOND anatomy book you should buy! Does not show bones and muscles. It only shows surface anatomy of male and female bodies. The artist draws the human body standing still, plus bending and twisting in different ways, so you can learn how to shade the form correctly.

3. Drawing The Human Head by Burne Hogarth. This book gives detailed information on drawing the head from any angle in correct proportion! Some people complain that they don't like Hogarth's drawing style. This book is not telling you to copy Hogarth's style of drawing, but it is teaching you facial proportion and facial anatomy!

4. Drawing The Head & Figure by Jack Hamm. This is an excellent book on learning to draw the figure from head to toe, plus it includes anatomy.

I recently got a nice big one called "Bridgman's complete guide to drawing from life". It's six of his (George Bridgman) books compiled into one.

It's FULL of a bunch of detailed lessons (seriously, there are six pages just talking about the thumb) and "over 1,000" drawings for anatomy!

The thing's full of MANY chapters (the whole book is 350 pages), so you can literally master the figure from all angles.

The original price is $18 (it's a paperback), but I'd gotten on sale at Barnes& Nobles for about 9 or $10.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but I can already tell it's a great reference, whether you want lessons, or just to look at pictures :D

If you don't get Jeno Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist:

http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Artist-Jeno-Barcsay/dp/1586631748

the Figure Drawing police will come to your house and confiscate your art supplies.

Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure used to be a guilty pleasure of mine -- I certainly wouldn't talk about it in public.

http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Head-Figure-Perigee-Jack/dp/0399507914/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314048051&sr=1-1

Then my last drawing teacher in college brought it to school and talked about it. Okay. Lot's of useful information in it.

Burne Hogarth invented the American Comic book Style and it shows in his Dynamic Figiure Drawing:

http://www.amazon.com/Dynamic-Figure-Drawing-Burne-Hogarth/dp/0823015777/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314048051&sr=1-7

He developed his ideas on the Tarzan Comic Strip then went on to found one of the institutions which became the School of Visual Arts where a number of cartoonists were educated. And yes, he's interesting fofr more than that.

On the other hand I'm always finding that when I mention George Bridgman:

http://www.amazon.com/Human-Machine-George-B-Bridgman/dp/0486227073

Peoples eyes glaze over.

Seriously. Read them all and especially read the last two together -- and OWN the Barcsay book or you will answer to the Figure Drawing Police.
