Even as far back as the ancient days of the 90s, Flash was available to digitally produce 2D animations.

Traditional animation is also known as cel animation. The drawings were made on celluloid film - which is transparant. The objects could then be moved independently.

This can be mimicked in graphic software by putting the different objects on different layers, they can then be manipulated independently, just as if they were on cels.

No special software is needed. Any decent drawing/graphic arts program handles layers.

If you are interested in animation of all sorts, I would recommend you look at a software package Blender: http://www.blender.org/

Equipments needed :

- Lightbox table

- Peg Bar

- Exposure sheet a.k.a Dopesheet

- Lots of animation papers (B4 size or maybe bigger , depends on you)

- A special camera for shooting 2D animation

- And a puncher specially for animation paper. (this one's real costly)

As for backgrounds and characters stuffs. You draw them separately.

You only draw one background and put it on hold for the first level , and then at the second level will be the drawings for your characters movements. (you might probably not get what I'm trying to say , but you'll understand when you see the equipments i mentioned above)

It's fun , but a lot of work.
