I am starting to draw, and I'm not bad. I'm really good at being able to look at a drawing to draw it, and it usually looks about the same (except when I try to draw faces), but I was wondering two things,

First, how can I start to think of my own ideas, because I can never think of what to draw.
And Second, how can I get better at drawing people. I've been looking at "how to" sites but they aren't really helping. Do I just need to keep drawing them until I get them or are there any easier ways?

Thanks so much!

1.) To get your own ideas, start pushing that brain. Put it in 1st gear, doodle and what not (scribble or trace or draw something by looking at it). Once you get it in flow, your brain should automatically get into gear 2. It should start coming up with simple ideas. Once you get into 2nd gear, the rest will follow soon. It could be anywhere from the day after to the year after.

2.) Yes. Keep drawing, practice and what not. It normally gives your brain a sort of "default". I sucked with faces, but I practiced a lot (the same thing over and over again for 6 hours on day 1, 8 hours the day after, and about 4 or so the day after). I still suck, but it's getting better. My brain has started to set up defaults for different dimensions, details, and stuff.

Hi, Kayla-

I love drawing, too. I just don't have enough time to do it! I suggest you check out some books from the library- drawing people and whatever other subjects interest you. Be sure you have lots of well sharpened pencils. Art stores have a variety of pencils and lead types.

You can also pull your 'references' from books. I took some Continuing Ed drawing classes at a local university. The teacher had us draw animals (I drew a bird). There were lots of areas of texture, shading, etc.

If you can, check into some drawing classes. These are a great way to improve your techniques and learn from art teachers. They're fun. No grades! I found them to be very good (better than when I was taking art classes in high school).

that's BS, drawing is not a talent its a LEARNED skill, something happened to you when you were a kid and from that event you developed a hobby of 'drawing/illustrating' things. An artist is a person who acquired vastly amount of information on how to draw 'this' or 'that', he/she spend more time on sketching/drawing/illustrating than an average person would. If you don't believe me, go visit an artist's art room you can see lots and lots of 'ugly' sketches b4 the artist select the most attractive one.
