I use strathmore bristo vellum 300 or 400 series. It is acid free and comes in single sheets as well as tablets, sheet sizes up to 22x30. I have also tested more expensive paper and found it not much of a difference. The cotton fiber or rag changes the price.

The best drawing surface to buy are surfaces that are labeled "archival" or "artist grade" or "professional grade" because they will last a very long time. You can also look for surfaces that are labeled with these words: acid-free, ph-neutral, lignin free, 100% cotton rag, 100% cotton, artist quality, fine quality, high quality, premium quality, professional quality. If you use "student grade" or "scholastic" surfaces your surface will deteriorate alot quicker and possibly turn yellow because these surfaces are made from lower quality materials.

Bristol Board that is Smooth Plate/Hot Press is excellent for a finished graphite pencil drawing. If you want more tooth in your paper, you could also use Bristol Board - Vellum surface. Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Board is archival.

Stonehenge Paper is excellent for colored pencil drawings or you can use Bristol Board Vellum.

These drawing lessons, both throughly enjoyable and productive, go well beyond casual sketching: students learn to observe minutely the details of any given face, to see what is, and what is not, before them, and how to translate what they see into what are after all just pencil marks on paper.

I highly recommend it for both the experienced and the inexperienced artists alike.

Cheers ;)

Aw, dude! Don't EVER color on thin paper with ink! Make a sketch on the thin paper, then trace it onto the good Strathmore drawing pad (not sketch, drawing). Then start coloring. It requires patience, but it's worth it!

well i shade in pencil crayon and i like to press quite hard, so i always go for the thicker paper because its durable. it holds through the sketching process, the outlining, the erasing and shading.

i would go for a semi smooth card. as they are just textured enough to hold the pencil shadings, but smooth enough to not be damaged when you erase.

good luck with the exhibition. x
