The first answer is correct although its never that easy. You can use the magic wand tool if its a background without alot of detail. The other way is to use the eraser tool. The best if you have an object that has wispy edges such as hair is to use the masking tool. Essentially you use different brushes to paint your background once you have the background painted you inverse the selection and hit delete.

If you want to preserve a transparent background to use in other applications you must save the image as a GIF after removing the background color (methods have already been suggested) and make sure that the origanl PSF file has background set as transparent or your image will still show up with a white background. GIFs are good for web or very small images such as a logo for a letterhead. Or if you need a higher quality image for example print work in InDesign you need to create a clipping mask to clip out any unwanted background (which you can find directions on how to in Photoshop's help feature) and then save as an EPS. JPEGs do not support transparent backgrounds and despite all your efforts to remove them a white box will appear behind your image.

Edit > Select ALL
Edit > Copy
Edit > Paste
This will create a copy of the entire image in a layer above the original image.
In the layers pallette, select the background layer, and hide it by clicking the "eyeball" icon.
Now select the top layer and begin erasing everything except the part of the image you want to see. The areas erased should become transparent and you will see the grey and white background that is "behind" the background layer.

If you have already created your image and want a transparent background, you should go to you toolbar and mouse over Layer, click on it and a menu opens scroll down to Layer Style and mouse over to Blending Options and click.
When the windows opens the default is set to 100% Opacity you want to move it to at least 50% or the the setting that meet your need, then click ok.
Many people suggest that you save the file in .gif format which is safe. I suggest that you may want to save it as a .png format for better quality. However I do not suggest you use png transparency for web designs. The feature may not look transparent on some computers. For web designing I suggest that you use the gif format. Try both .gif and .png both work well with transparency.

i just wanted to point out that there is an easier way to get rid of a background and the cut out will turn out sharper and with better edges..
using the pen tool.. (path) draw an out line around the image you want, then after you close the path.. with the arrow (A) select the path.. right click on an anchor and select (make path).. then inverse it..
this way you can also add feather to the selection before you delete the background..
and ofcourse don't save it as a JPEG. file
choose PSD. or a format that will support the transparent background..

And I'm going to add: make sure you double click on your image Layer to unlock it *before* you delete the background or erase it. Save as either a .psd or a .png (or a .tiff if you're pedantic) to preserve the transparent layer.

you you select it with a magic wand and then in the layer there's an opacity 100% you could lessen that down, to whatever percentage you want to have a colored transparency look.
