I can't use any of Photoshop's standard warp text features, because they curve the text while distorting it. I want all the lines top stay straight.

Here's the famous Space Invaders logo from the SNES version of the game, which shows precisely the effect I'm going for. Narrow at the bottom, wide at the top, no bulging.

Any suggestions?

Make a backup of your file first to be safe.

Pick your layer with text and "Convert to Smart Object". Use eather the flyout menu on the layers pallet and pick "Convert to Smart Object" or go to Layer>Smart Objects>Convert to Smart Object

Then do a "Free Transform" command + t on mac or ctrl + t on PC ... or edit>free transform

You now have a bounding box around your type.

On a Mac - Hold down shift + command + option

On a PC - Hold down shift + ctrl + alt

With those keys held down click on one of the corners and drag in and out for your desired effect.

Hit enter to finalize your transformation.

To edit your text now that its a smart object, double click on the Smart objects thumbnail on the layers pallet. Or go Layer>Smart Objects>Edit Contents

You have warps so you would have to be using CS2-CS4 which have smart layers. PS6 to CS1 you would need to convert your type to a vector layer leaving it un-editable with the type tool. PS5.5 and earlier the type layer would need to be rasterized before being able to do a transform like that.

Hi Cotton Tablecloth, good to hear again from you. I know you asked about PhotoShop, but I don't use the program, however you can do this in Microsoft Word, maybe this can be helpful to you (or others who read this)?

For example in Word 2002 go to Menu > Insert > Picture > Word Art. Choose a general design (you can change the details later), then WordArt Shape button in the little WordArt toolbar that came up when you started this. Chose the Fade Down option, bottom row, fourth one from the left.

Play around with the other toolbar items, you can change most of the text stuff. Maybe you can use this to get started doing more fine tuning in PhotoShop?

If either Pacman or Space Invaders could be adapted in Vegas or any other gambling mecca to where people could win money if they reached a certain score or acquired bonuses in the games, they'd be just as addicting as slot machines. It's all in one's perspective. If you want an answer referring to which is the most enjoyable it would have to be Pacman. I remember way back in the late 80s there was a Ms. Pacman in a restaurant my brother worked in and I would come in once in awhile to play it. I'm sure there are individuals that have exceeded 1 million points in the game, but I felt rather proud of myself having gotten a score of 999,900+. The boards get faster and faster progressively until it takes a player only 20 seconds to clear one when the scores get past 700,000. I'd wager to say I cleared over 70 boards and played for almost 3 hours.
