Question:
A couple drawing tips please?

I'm currently workin on a drawin of a monster that's somewhere between a dragon and a gargoyle.
Most of my drawings are in pencil (you know, simple black, grey and white) but I kinda feel like doing this one in color.
My 2 questions are:

What can I add to this drawing to give more texture/flavor? Because most of my drawings turn out kinda flat

Second, I'm leaning toward grey, but do you think I should go for something else color-wise?

Now I know this may sound weird and you're probably thinkin, "this is your drawing, dude. Do it like you want to"
But I'm still an amateur when it comes to stuff like this.
Thanks in advance for any help.

what expression do you want morter. scary or humorous or sharp minded? Well, its obvious monster word always connected to fear, frightened etc kind of terrible, horrible words. So,go for Scary one.Now backdrop is main problem, well add some frightened ,fearful old town people running in streets (usually old fashioned along with poor constructed houses,to add more horror )for survive .for texture you can draw a Forts or Palace on a hill or mountain covered by town people.Usually old timed myths like stories

The most important thing to do is stop thinking in a flat way. Right now your doing what all beginners do and that's drawing outlines. An eye is a sphere with lines running over it, not an almond shape. Start by drawing a light ball and then run lines around it visualizing in your head that it's actually round, not a circle. Start by drawing simple geometric shapes, like a cylinder, cube, pyramid. Once you start feeling more secure with these start combining them to create simple objects. A wine bottle is a series of cylinders, a phone a series of boxes. Always start lightly and build a foundation for your subject, then gradually refine your rough shapes. and only at the very end do you add on details. Best of luck!

To create texture & depth, you can use many different kinds of pencil strokes, including cross-hatching, etc. And also use light & dark areas, tones, etc. to show depth. You will find many techniques, tips & tutorials for the same :

As for colour, you could continue with the grey for overall creature body. But add touches of color eg. red eyes; blue or green tinted edges to the body where the light seems to fall; steel blue/red/yellow talons; & so on. Choose what you want to highlight & what kind of "story" you want to narrate through it's actions & then select colors/highlights.

And as one of the posters suggested, add some background details too. If you don't want it too detailed, you could simply have some bold pencil strokes to represent a street or road .... along with the creature's shadow.
