hi i want to make a feather pen(quill pen). I live in Bakersfield and i want to know if a store bought fake feather would work.... it is winter and there are no feathers outside.I also want to know where can i get a long feather and how much it will cost. I want it to be cheap and it has to be a pack of feathers(doesn't have to but can).
Thank You :) 10 POINTS!

The reason why a real feather works is the quill shaft is hollow. The tip is literally carved into the end. If the fake has the same properties to the quill, that it is hollow and can be shaped with a knife, then in MIGHT work. I don't know about where you can get feathers and such. I imagine any art store would have them, or better yet, some kind of place with fashion accessories.

It is unlikely that the fake will be made to the level of detail to allow you to use it as a quill, they are made for decorative purposes, so there would be no need to make the hollow stem that can be shaped with a knife.

I would look for a proper swan/goose/turkey pin feather from an art shop or consider an alternative, for example, reed or bamboo pens can produce an interesting line.

When using a quill you will find it more usable if you remove most of the feathery section as the air resistance actually slows down your strokes.

Is this... the Colonial times again..?

HECK YEAH THAT'S SO COOL! I think I will go to the craft store, pick up some feathers and ink, then watch The Patriot while I write hand-written letters to all my friends and relatives.

Friday night = MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
