Look for special driver settings. Many drivers have a multipage option or poster setting.

Open up the program you'll be printing from. This could be Microsoft Publisher, Powerpoint or the design program of your choice.

Choose the file you want to print and click the "Print" option.

Choose your printer. There should be a drop-down menu with a list of printers. Select yours.

Click the "Properties" option. This will open your printer properties.

Look for a "Page layout" section. It might have a tab of its own or you might find it under the "Page setup" option.

Choose the "Poster printing" option. This should enable you to be able to print on several pages that can be taped together.

Specify your size. There are usually presets for this, like "3 x 3" or "2 x 2". This affects how many sheets of paper your poster will be printed on.

Create your document. Make your poster as if you were printing it on a single page.

Print. Be sure your settings have been saved.

Tape the pages together. Some programs include a bit of overlap, so try to visualize the whole poster before you tape

My advice if you want a professional looking piece of work is to going to a professional printing shop who will use one of their big printers to reproduce your image for you at a price (depending on how big the image is/quantity of the image/quality of the inks). This can be pricey sometimes but the end result is usually worth it.

If you're just looking for a rough print out, here is how I would do it:

Well first of all you need some software like Photoshop. Open up the image in Photoshop, then select the Rectangular Marquee tool. You should see in the tool bar two boxes that say 'Width' and Height'. First you need to select the Style to 'Fixed Size'. This is so you cannot change the size of the selection box. Now we need to input the dimensions of width and height. For an A4 piece of paper, this is: 210 mm (width) x 297 mm (height).

Now, you should be able to select with the Rectangular Marquee tool a square that is exactly A4 in size. We now have to select parts of the image to separate them to be printed. To do this, go along the image and select the top left corner. Once you have done that, copy the selection and paste. This will put the selection in a new layer. You need to repeat this process with all sections of the image until you have covered all of the poster.

Lastly, you have to open as many new files at A4 size as layers that you have created. This is so we can copy and paste each layer into its own file, which can then be saved individually and then printed as normal.

Hope that wasn't too complicated ( you need to know the software a little ), if you need help there are many tutorials on the internet. I'm sure a similar method can be used in free software like Gimp if you do not have Photoshop.
