I'm in school for Animation/VFX right now, and I aspire to be working with Pixar or Disney in the near future.

Be knowledgeable.

Be industrious.

Be indispensable.

Be eager and enthusiastic.

Be tolerant.

Study every damn cartoon you can find. Some are more important than others, but even the crappy cartoons have something to show.

Learn all you can about the history of the art form and of the industry. The more you know, the less likely you will be to making mistakes.

Learn everything you can about Disney and Pixar. Don't be fanboyish about it, but know the history and the productions. You might be able to cite a previous cartoon as an example to solving a particular problem.

Become a frequent visitor to John Kricfalusi's blog:

http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/

He also runs an invitation-only "school" blog.

He is one of the most important animators in the industry, if only for his criticism and activism.

If you can't intern at Disney or Pixar, intern elsewhere in your field. Any experience is great experience, and it's possible that people you meet at those other companies might result in a connection at Disney/Pixar.

Make the most of every opportunity. Personally, I would spend every waking hour possible at your internship. Make yourself indispensable. Volunteer for anything you feel qualified to accomplish. Ask lots of questions. If you can, see if the company has a mentoring program, or individuals who are willing to advise you. Many companies hire interns for full-time positions, using internships as a testing ground. And most important... tolerate any drudgery. It's experience, and it probably will gain you rewards later.

With modern technology, it is easy to communicate with industry professionals. See who blogs. Start conversations, or comment frequently if you have something to say. Many industry professionals were once students, and will give advice. Of course, be polite. You're making connections, and those connections might pay off years later.

You should also animate in your spare time as well. Show the world your dedication and devotion to the craft! Post simple flash videos to your website (which will serve as a visual portfolio/resume). Do not take criticism personally. Correct your faults, and improve with every cartoon.

Jay,

Work on your animations day and night. You are one of MANY people who want to do that, so you have to make yourself the best animator or Previz on the planet. Go to their website and read the personnel section on a regular basis. That will tell you what is expected of employees or interns. Be willing to do your internship without pay. That is common, and you must not complain while you are doing that.

Make yourself the most valuable person on the property and you may just get hired. You can also email Pixar Studio for thier assistance. They get hundreds of emails a day, so be prepared to wait long periods of time before you get an answer. Let them know you will not give up in the least.
