1.) Draw everything you see, draw constantly, study EVERYTHING you can about form, volume, shape, line, environment, perspective, anatomy, life drawing, draw it ALL. If you are going to be an animator, or cartoonist, you will have to know drawing inside and out.

2.) Watch disney cartoons, watch the way they move, try to make your drawings convey movement. Take dance classes, do sports, learn how the body moves, learn how cars, animals, trees in the wind move. Notice the difference in weight of objects and how they travel. Watch other types of cartoons, can you notice the difference in the quality of movement, the way characters are drawn, the way expressions are conveyed?

3.) Get a copy of "The Illusion of Life" which is the Disney animation bible by two of Disney's 9 old men, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.

Find books by Preson Blair, and look up the book about Mary Blair, who was Disney's color expert.

4.) Get your hands on the program Flash and teach yourself the beginnings of animation, make some small pieces, and also start creating characters and working on moving them through space.

5.) Apply to California Institute of the Arts, their character animation program is THE place you want to be if you want to be a Disney animator. If you do this program, you won't be doing much socializing, it is a very challenging program, and to be a truly successful animator, you will have to work very hard and know your craft, it's a very competitive environment, you'll have to throw down with the best of them.

6.) Make friends in school, collaborate on projects, make storyboards, you will end up meeting lots of cool people, and working with them, maybe on Disney projects, and maybe even some cooler things. Working hard and maintaining contacts is key.

Why do you want to work for Disney? No, they are heading down the tubes. Last year the shut production down on a film

and sacked a load of animators...No blue sky studio or Dreamworks..Thats where the creative freedom lies.

If your dead set on a job at disney, its best to write to someone in the know there so get on seach engine, find a director or someone in charge of recruting and ask them how you go about getting a job.. Send a demo reel so they can give you pointers...But disney are funny, so dont hold your breath they might not get back in touch... All the best hope it goes well.

You are both incorrect...

First of all, Disney hires Animators, not cartoonists.

Second of all, it is a long and arduous process involving years of training at art school (preferably CalArts in California) and creating and perfecting a portfolio of hand drawn as well as computer illustrated characters, background art, pencil sketches and character studies. Once your portfolio has been submitted and reviewed by the casting directors in the feature animation department, you will then either be granted an interview or given a "thanks but no thanks" letter. Good Luck

That's true. I have a friend who worked in the parking lot for 4 years and was getting excited about his interview to work in one of the park's restaurants! He moved, though. But yes it takes a LONG time and I'm sure a degree or two. They are called Imagineers, not cartoonists. (imagine-eers).

Everyone who works for Disney, who is not under 16, starts off working in the parks. You get opportunities to apply for positions from there.
