Only those with real, unique talent sell enough of their art to live solely of of that income. Most others have a job on the side to survive. It's a noble profession, but it's also a committment. Don't get into it to get rich, get into it because you love it.

As any other job mostly all the time you can find places when you can make good money or you barely can survive.

Artists are not the exception, is a very competitive area full of talented people and imagine all them pursuit the fame(they are millions)in low and high levels.

Some to became rich it will depend the area that you'll explode(what are you good in) but some, even that they are highly talented they live very poorly and died very poorly.(I am very close to rich and poor actors, i know what i am talking about)

So you must make a intense research and find out in what artistic area you are good,I also recommend before anything else that you have in mind is to take classes of business management because that is one of the reasons why many artist even if they have money they are always broke because they don't know how to manage their money and the people that they hire (managers, assistants, lawyers accountants, photographers an so,so)mostly all the time are cleaver rats that know how to steal money( in the most smart and silent way that you can't even know how to defend yourself, they as a thiefs sometimes get organized and the will clean you wallet so nicely that you won't have neither food for yourself and they will have all the economic benefits, just be very careful) from them so before you want to became and artist you must be good in mathematics and economy, because you must be in chage all times no matter what you must be the one who control your economy. after that, you will be enough wise to advance in the world art as a singer, actor or anything you want it and of course try to avoid addictions, that also is a negative souce of fail,if you want to success you must have alerted mind in that way opportunities won't escape from you.

Thomas Kincaid certainly is not poor. It depends a lot on how you market your art. If you reproduce it in a way that can sell broadly, you can get wealthy. A sculptor who sculpts doll heads, hands and feet, for example, can become quite well off if he's very good at it. Again, it's marketing: no good reproducing 5,000 if you're only going to sell 500 at the list price and the remainder at deeper and deeper discounts.

So yes, a few artists make a good living. And most, according to tradition, starve.

If ya mean standing on the corner selling your painting ,NO.However, there are very high paying jobs related to art.Someone has designed the coke label.Someone is taking pictures through the hubble space telescope.Someone is drawing out the next new car, truck, boat.Someone is painting the next xmas card.Yea there are high paying jobs for artists. So grab your cardboard box, your isle and paints, come on down to the corner, theres plenty of room.
