Many art teachers say cross-hatching is more professional, but I prefer smudging with a blending tortillion.

It depends on the artist. I think those teachers are just snobs. Both are good for different things. I also prefer smudging, and as long as you keep it clean it can look just as sharp as cross-hatching

I prefer smudging to cross-hatching, hands down. It creates the soft look of shadowing, while cross hatching...well, what shadows do you ever see cross hatched? Cross hatching is for specific types of drawings-usually pen and ink. Smudging is much more common as it is used with pencil, charcoal, pastels, chalk, conte crayon and more.

I am a professional artist and I use both methods and a few more depending on how I want to make something look. I also use hatching, pointillism (stippling), and scumbling (like scribbling).
