The Adobe Creative Suite. This includes a whole range of programs in the one. But as a designer myself, there are 4 that I work with that I think are great with this set. These are:

Photoshop - Working with photos through pixels. Post-Production, effects, photo manipulation etc This gives you the choice to arrange photos and get effects you just cant on a camera. You are also able to design in here ie: ready for the web etc.

Illustrator - This is a vector based program which allows you to draw vector items. Vector's basically allow you more freedom. This means drawing, shapes, paths, pretty much graphic design stuff in general. Its all about the freedom!

Indesign - This is for laying up and is very very similar to illustrator. You can also design in here which I do all the time. It has pretty much all the tools illustrator has. This gives you the control to lay up magazine pages, posters, all communicative advertising sort of material as it also gives you the options to package your files and get them in the correct format for print (ie: to send to the printers etc)

Dreamweaver - Designing websites. This allows you to create a working/functioning website. Buttons/Links etc etc!

Flash - This is animation. It allows you to create moving icons/Banners etc and you are also able to make a functioning website in this also. So all those things that move when you go to a webpage, most likely done in this

This suite is expensive but is defiantly work it. You could almost buy it and go halves with a friend. There are two licenses so that allows you to put one on say a laptop and one on a desktop. But could be great to go halves! If you wanted to be cheeky you could download a torrent and download from the net, but I would not recommend this! There is also student versions available so if you have a friend that can provide a student i.d, discounted rate :D

This is much like asking which vehicle is the best.

Of course, it depends on what you want that vehicle to do. If you want to carry several tons of material from one city to another, a semi tractor trailer might be the solution. For even more stuff, a freight train would be better. If you are in a hurry, an airplane might be better; For carrying a LOT of stuff, nothing carries more than a seagoing freighter ship.

But if you want a vehicle to carry kids and equipment to soccer practice, a minivan does a good job. If you just want a vehicle to pick up groceries, a compact or subcompact car might be your choice. If you needed to get around a race track very quickly, specially built race cars are a better choice.

It's the same for graphic design software. Asking for ONE of the best is hard to answer. While a lot of photographer will tell you that Lightwave is the best post production photo app, I am VERY happy with my Photoshop. But I wouldn't do any full page layouts in Photoshop when there are so many other apps with better tools to make the job easier. I can do a decent page layout in Illustrator, including it's excellent text tools, InDesign is a much better tool. And I would never consider doing a multipage document like a booklet or book in anything BUT InDesign. (I was trained in Quark but I left that behind a long time ago) For photorealistic images created from scratch, Illustrator is the EXACT tool needed.

I wouldn't compose an extensive text document in anything BUT Microsoft Word. Or graphing data in anything but Excel, or simple 2D animation in anything other than Flash.

Do you get the idea? The BEST tool to use in ANY application is that tool that is created to DO that job the best. As a graphic designer, I keep a well stocked tool box in my computer. Like a master carpenter, I may realize that I can drive a nail with the flat end of a box wrench, a hammer can do a much better job of it.

Look at the Adobe Creative Suite – professional standard but not cheap.

Graphic design is not about the software, they are (valuable) tools.

Yeah, what the guy above said! I'd say Adobe InDesign in particular. :)

Apparently QuarkXPress is good to, but I've never used it and I think it's more complicated than Adobe.
