How can I make paintbrush- like strokes using GIMP?

As if I wre using a paintbrush, thats what I would like for it to look like.

Well of course you could use the Paintbrush tool to paint something and it will look like paintbrush strokes, but I suppose you mean that you want to make a photo look like it has paintbrush strokes on it. In this case, you could use the Smudge tool to manually "paint" around on your image to smear parts of it, which would create a sort of paintbrush stroke effect. You can also use Filters>Artistic>Oilify to make your photo look sort of like an oil paining.
You could also try downloading the GREYCstoration plugin for GIMP: http://cimg.sourceforge.net/greycstoration/download.shtml . This tool is intended for removing noise from an image, but if you put some of the settings to the extreme, it will smear the image around in a way that can look a bit like a painting.

Gimp does what it does and you can't modify it.
